TAMPA — Zack Britton replaced the “H” with a “K” at the end of his first name recently, but when it came to the left-handed reliever throwing batting practice to hitters Tuesday on the back field, nothing changed from other spring trainings.

“My mind-set doesn’t change,” said Britton, who signed a three-year deal worth $39 million to return to the Yankees and pitch in front of closer Aroldis Chapman instead of closing for other teams. “I don’t want people hitting me all over the park. It’s good to work on stuff. It felt good to have guys swinging. That was the best thing about today.”

Britton, 31, has 142 career saves and posted 36, 37 and 42 from 2014-16 with the Orioles. An Achilles heel injury in late December 2017 that required surgery limited him to 41 games for the O’s and Yankees last season. In 25 games for the Yankees, he posted a 2.88 ERA and three saves.

“You get a hitter in there and you reach back a little bit more,” said Britton, who is a big part of what many consider the best bullpen in the majors and one of the reasons the Yankees have a chance to close the gap on the defending World Series champion Red Sox in the AL East. “I like to see the hitters’ reaction.”

While his signature sinker misbehaved at times during his 25 games with the Yankees, who sent three minor league hurlers to Baltimore, Britton was pleased with the action on it Tuesday.

“I commanded the breaking ball better, and the sinker did what I wanted it to do,” Britton said.
