Here’s a look at other times Mets players and officials have snapped at members of the media:
April 1993
Eddie Murray and Bobby Bonilla confronted Daily News reporter Bob Klapisch about a book “The Worst Team Money Could Buy,” written by Klapisch and former Post beat writer John Harper, about the Mets’ disastrous 1992-93 season. Bonilla at one point had to be restrained by team PR director Jay Horwitz. Bonilla, who grew up in New York City, infamously told Klapisch, “’I’ll hurt you. I’ll show you The Bronx.”
July 1993
Pitcher Bret Saberhagen used a water gun to splatter three reporters with bleach. None was harmed. Also that season, Saberhagen lit firecrackers near reporters as they interviewed fellow pitcher Anthony Young.
July 2009
General manager Omar Minaya, while announcing the firing of vice president of player development Tony Bernazard, called into question the ethics of Daily News reporter Adam Rubin. Minaya claimed Rubin had “lobbied” the Mets for a job in their front office. Rubin denied asking for such a position. He later receive an apology from Minaya and Mets COO Jeff Wilpon.
