Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was finally called up by the Toronto Blue Jays last Friday. It didn’t take long for a new contender to stake his claim as baseball’s No. 1 prospect.
Casey Mize, the Detroit Tigers’ No. 1 overall draft pick a year ago out of Auburn, threw a no-hitter in his Double-A debut for the Erie SeaWolves on Monday. The 97-pitch gem continued the 6-foot right-hander’s stellar start to the season. In five starts, the Tigers’ top prospect has notched a 0.26 ERA – he’s allowed one earned run in 35 innings — 0.26 WHIP and a 32/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s given up just seven hits.
And Mize didn’t even think he pitched that well in his no-hitter.
“The fastball command was not good, the worst it’s been all year,” he told reporters. “I’ll say that with complete confidence. You can look at the video, it wasn’t good. So I threw a ton of cutters and just relied on that.”
Baseball America has Mize ranked 15th, but Keith Law, ESPN’s prospect guru, believes he’s ready for the major leagues already.
Maybe, before long, he’ll be facing Guerrero.
