Detroit Tigers outfielder Nick Castellanos helped break the team’s six-game losing streak Sunday by slamming a walk-off homer, but he isn’t as thrilled as expected.
A frustrated Castellano used the moment to rip his team’s home ballpark for how deep it is to center field, feeling it has cost the team home runs.
“This park’s a joke. It’s to the point where, how are we going to be compared to the rest of the people in the league for power numbers, OPS, slugging and all this stuff when we got a yard out here that’s 420 feet straight across in center field?” Castellanos said, per the Detroit News, after hitting a 372-foot homer to left field.
The 27-year-old led the majors with 10 triples in 2017. This year he’s slashing .284/.342/.480 and leads the majors in doubles with 34, for which he has Comerica Park to thank.
“We get on second base or third base, and they’re looking, like, ‘Man, how do you guys do this?’ We play 81 games here. I don’t want to hear about your two that you hit that are questionable,” Castellanos said.
The displeased right fielder could be dealt before the July 31 trade deadline. The odds may turn out in his favor if he leaves the Tigers, as his OPS at Comerica Park this season is .720, while on the road he’s up to .922.
Entering Tuesday, the Tigers’ 34 homers at Comerica Park were the fewest an MLB team has hit at home this season, and their 89 homers overall were the second-fewest in the majors.
