Blue Jays left-hander Tim Mayza is coming off one of his best seasons on the field, but the longtime reliever was forced to serve as a bat boy for the first three innings of Toronto’s Grapefruit League opener against the Phillies on Saturday.
The reason?
The 32-year-old was serving his punishment for having finished last in the team’s fantasy football league last year, TSN reported, before the lefty was seen on the field Saturday afternoon in Dunedin, Florida retrieving bats.

Mayza was set to work on his new duties for three innings.

The report noted that Mayza, who is the longest-tenured Blue Jay, was done in during the football season in part by the season-ending injury to Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins despite having top Dolphins wideout Tyreek Hill on his squad.
Mayza will be a key part of Toronto’s bullpen this season, coming off three consecutive strong years, as the Blue Jays look to get past the wild-card round this season for the first time since 2016.
