Tony La Russa is a Hall of Fame manager with three World Series rings. That wasn’t going to get him out of his second arrest for driving under the influence.

After La Russa — who was hired by the White Sox last week to return to the dugout for the first time in 10 years — hit a curb with his car while driving in the Phoenix-area in February, a police officer arrived to the scene and detected a “light odor of alcohol beverage,” according to court records obtained by ESPN. When the 76-year-old was being placed into the backseat of the police vehicle, La Russa attempted to talk his way out of trouble by talking up his legendary past.

“Do you see my ring?” La Russia reportedly said.

The officer didn’t understand what La Russa meant.

“I’m a Hall of Fame baseball person,” he said. “I’m legit. I’m a Hall of Famer, brother. You’re trying to embarrass me.”

La Russa, described as “argumentative” in an affidavit filed by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI in Florida in 2007 after police said he fell asleep at a traffic light near the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training facility.

During the Feb. 24 incident, La Russa told the officer he struck something with his car and suffered a flat tire. La Russa then refused to take a breathalyzer test or adhere to a blood or urine test, prompting the officer to get a search warrant, and eventually get two tubes of blood from La Russa, who registered a blood-alcohol content of .08 or more. La Russa could face as much as 10 days in jail, though he is unlikely to serve more than one day in jail, pay a fine and be required to use an ignition interlock device on his car for one year.

The case was filed with the Maricopa County Justice Courts on Oct. 28, one day prior to La Russa being hired by the White Sox. The team would not comment on the incident.

“Because this is an active case, we cannot comment further at this time,” a White Sox spokesman told ESPN.
