The Twins left Yankee Stadium with more than hurt pride. They lost second baseman Tsuyoshi Nishioka to a broken left leg after Nick Swisher slid into him at second base trying to break up a double play in the seventh inning.

The Twins did not feel the slide was dirty by Swisher, who looked like he got a late start and slid to the left of the bag.

“That’s not an issue at all,” Twins manager Ron Gardnehire said. “It was a good slide. Swisher is a clean player.”

Nishioka signed a three-year, $9.25 million deal in December to join the Twins after playing for Chiba Lotte in Japan.

Swisher spoke with Nishioka in the X-ray room at Yankee Stadium before he found out how serious the injury was. The 26-year-old told Swisher he did not blame him.

“You don’t ever want to hurt anybody, especially a guy like that coming over and trying to make his mark over here,” Swisher said. “You just feel bad about that.”
