Chase Utley’s vicious take-out slide of Ruben Tejada resulted in a broken leg, an abrupt tidal shift of Game 2 of the NLDS and an inflamed Twitter world.
Former and current Mets, players across the MLB, analysts and lay fans alike erupted after Utley was ruled safe on a controversial take-out slide in the seventh inning on Saturday, helping the Dodgers spark a rally in an eventual 5-2 Los Angeles victory, evening the series at 1-1.
But long after the former Phillie fractured Tejada’s right fibula — long after the game was over — social media was aflame at the veteran second baseman and the rules that allowed the play to be reviewed. While “neighborhood” plays are not reviewable, the umpires determined that the play could be seen as a force play — and a play in which Utley was never forced out or tagged.
