Christian Colon was the fourth pick in the 2010 draft, so he didn’t exactly stumble into a big World Series moment in Game 5 on Sunday night against the Mets at Citi Field.
Colon, a backup infielder, hadn’t appeared in any of the Royals’ 15 postseason games. But when Royals manager Ned Yost needed a pinch-hitter for pitcher Luke Hochever in the 12th inning, he turned to Colon because the only other option was Raul Mondesi, who was playing in the Arizona Fall League last week.
Colon’s sharp single off Addison Reed scored Jarrod Dyson to break a tie and helped the Royals take a 7-2 victory that gave them a World Series title.
“I looked in the dugout and saw Jonny Gomes. I was so excited,’’ said Colon, who played in 43 big league games this season, got 107 at-bats and hit .290 during the regular season. “I almost wanted to tear up, but I couldn’t.’’
Colon wasn’t on last year’s World Series roster because of a broken finger that affected his throwing.
“We kept him on this year because we felt as a staff that he was a clutch-type player,’’ Yost said. “He is a winner and you put him in a situation and he is going to give you everything he’s got. For him to come through and get the big hit, it was just special.’’
