Assistant GM John Ricco offered some injury updates this afternoon before the Mets took on the Diamondbacks, including news on Pedro Martinezâs rehabilitation: — Pedro, out since April 1 with a strained left hamstring, is throwing very light side sessions in Port St. Lucie. The next step is simulated games or extended spring training, although the Mets donât have a timetable for when Martinez will do either. Itâs still looking like the first of June, at the earliest, for Pedro to resume his spot in the Metsâ rotation.
— Reliever Matt Wise, out since the second day of the season with a bruised right forearm, threw two innings for Class A Port St. Lucie in the Florida State League on Saturday. Wise will throw on back-to-back days this week in St. Lucie and could return to the Metsâ bullpen once they return from this road trip.
— Backup catcher Ramon Castro, out since late in spring training with a strained hamstring, caught seven innings for St. Lucie in the FSL on Saturday and is scheduled to start in that capacity again tonight. Like Wise, the Mets wonât know Castroâs availability until after they get back to New York.
— Orlando Hernandezâs ailing right foot, which is still in a protective boot, will be re-examined in New York next week. The Mets donât know when El Duque will be back, or even if he will back, although the 40-something Cuban has told them he still wants to pitch.
