Alex Rodriguez’s admission of steroid use doesn’t just place a cloud over all baseball players, but also over every athlete in every pro sport.
Venus Williams, however, believes tennis players shouldn’t be among them.
“I think that tennis is a completely different sport,” the defending Wimbledon champion said yesterday on a conference call to promote her involvement in a one-night tennis tournament at Madison Square Garden on March 2 that will also include her sister, Serena.
“You can be not as strong and still be the winner,” Venus said. “You have to hold your nerve and I don’t know if there’s a drug for that. It’s a little different.”
Tennis does have an intensive steroid-testing program and players have been suspended for years after positive results – as the other A-Rod, Andy Roddick, pointed out this week during the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.
“It makes me prouder of tennis,” Roddick told reporters. “We have the strictest testing in sports.”
