When the Mets and Yankees meet Friday night in The Bronx, it will mark the 15th summer of the Subway Series. To commemorate the occasion, the Post’s baseball experts will be handing out awards from across the 78 regular-season games between the two franchises.
Today’s award will be for the most memorable rookie performance in Subway Series history.
Nominees
Brandon Claussen, Yankees
On June 28, 2003, the Yankees called up the left-hander, their top pitching prospect, to face the Mets at Shea Stadium in the nightcap of a dual-stadium doubleheader. Claussen rose to the occasion, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits across 6 1⁄3 innings, striking out five and walking one in a 9-8 Yankees win.
Dae-Sung Koo, Mets
After entering the game as a reliever for the Mets in the top of the seventh inning, the pitcher took his turn at bat to lead off the bottom of the inning at Shea Stadium against Randy Johnson on May 21, 2005. With no one giving Koo a chance against the likely Hall of Famer, he stunned the crowd by crushing a double off of the center-field wall. Then, when Jose Reyes bunted to sacrifice Koo to third, as Koo rounded third he saw no one was covering the plate. He managed to beat Jorge Posada in a footrace home to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. They would go on to win 7-1.
Tyler Clippard, Yankees
After Yankees starter Darrell Rasner broke his finger on a first-inning line drive off the bat of Endy Chavez the day before — forcing the Yankees to use six relievers — they desperately needed young right-hander Clippard to give them some innings in his major-league debut on May 20, 2007, in a Sunday night game at Shea Stadium. Clippard delivered, allowing one run on three hits in six innings, striking out six and walking three in a 6-2 Yankees win.
Winner
Claussen, who capped off arguably the most memorable day in Subway Series history with an equally memorable performance to help the Yankees sweep the dual-stadium doubleheader.
