Billy Wagner threw off the mound today, reported no major problems with his left elbow and could come off the DL as soon as next Tuesday. Wagner likely will make a minor-league rehab assignment Sunday for Single-A Brooklyn, but that is not a definite. Jerry Manuel also said this afternoon that Wagner probably will not return to the closer role right away and might not regain that spot at all if his first few outings don’t get well. Manuel has that luxury because Luis Ayala has fared so well in Wagner’s absence.
