In a bit of a surprise, closer Billy Wagner was chosen over David Wright, Jose Reyes and Johan Santana this afternoon to represent the Mets in the July 15 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. But Wright’s chances aren’t dead just yet. Major League Baseball is holding an open fan vote via mobile phones and mlb.com to decide the final spot on each 32-man roster. Wright is one of five candidates in that vote, results of which will be announced Thursday.

The other four candidates in the NL competing with Wright for the final spot are all outfielders: Pat Burrell (Phillies), Corey Hart (Brewers), Carlos Lee (Astros) and Aaron Rowand (Giants).

The Mets won’t have a starter in the game because none of their players finished first at their respective positions in the fan voting.
