Chien-Ming Wang passed one test today, throwing without feeling pain in his right calf, but the Yankees right-hander still wasn’t cleared to make his scheduled Saturday start against the Mariners.
Joe Girardi said he wants to see how Wang responds today to fielding drills — mainly covering first base — before making a final decision.
“He is fine, he’s healthy,” pitching coach Dave Eiland said of Wang.
Wang first experienced the discomfort covering first base in his loss to the Mets on Sunday. A subsequent MRI exam revealed a strain.
Wang said he felt good throwing, but understood Girardi’s rationale for waiting another day. Girardi previously said it was possible Wang’s start would be pushed back to Sunday if there were any complications.
“We have to make sure it’s not hurting,” Wang said.
