WASHINGTON — With President Trump expected to attend World Series Game 5 on Sunday night, there was heightened security in and around Nationals Park.

And questions to the Astros and Nationals about whether Trump was welcomed.

“You know what, he is coming to the game. He is a fan,’’ Nationals manager Dave Martinez said when asked if Trump’s presence would cause a distraction. “Hopefully he cheers for the Washington Nationals and I hope he enjoys the game.’’

As for the Nationals wanting Trump in the stadium, Martinez said the topic took a back seat to his team preparing for a pivotal game in a series that was tied, 22-2.

“We haven’t really talked about it. We’re focused in on playing baseball,’’ Martinez said.

Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg said the biggest difference Trump’s presence caused was security related.

“I think everybody is excited. It’s the president of the United States. So there’s obviously beefed-up security. So usually the dogs that are sniffing in our clubhouse are these nice Labs that are super friendly,’’ said Strasburg, who is scheduled to start Game 6 Tuesday night in Houston. “And [Sunday] there was a German shepherd that I didn’t really feel comfortable petting. Obviously there’s a lot of extra security around the ballpark, too.’’

Astros starter Justin Verlander said Trump attending Game 5 wasn’t a hot topic in the clubhouse.

“I don’t know the team sentiment. We haven’t really discussed it all that much. We’re worried about winning a baseball game,’’ Verlander said. “He’s the president of the United States. If he wants to attend a baseball game, I think he has every right to be here just as much as everybody else in the stadium.’’

Verlander dodged a question about going to the White House if the Astros win the World Series.

“That’s kind of superstitious, I can’t answer that question,” Verlander said.

Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki left Game 3 Friday night with a hip flexor issue, didn’t play Saturday and wasn’t in the lineup for Game 5.

“He’s better [Sunday]. [Saturday] he came up to me toward the end of the game, told me he could pinch hit. I thought with Joe [Ross] starting, let Yan [Gomes] catch, give [Suzuki] another day and with an off day [Monday] he should be ready to go Game 6,’’ Martinez said.
