The Padres may not be the “mystery team” that was supposedly chasing Manny Machado. But they do qualify as a surprise to be involved with the superstar infielder.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribute, the Padres are pursuing the 26-year-old to play third base and grew interested a week ago when word spread that his price tag may not be as high as once thought.

The White Sox and Phillies have been linked the most to Machado, with the Yankees on the periphery. There was a report the White Sox offered Machado a seven-year, $175 contract, though that was forcefully denied by his agent, Dan Lozano.

It has been reported that Machado is seeking a mega-deal, in the range of 10 years and $300 million.
