Jeff McNeil had another active day Wednesday, taking batting practice with the first group of hitters, fielding ground balls at second base and shagging fly balls in center field.
“It feels good,” McNeil said as he left the field to get further treatment on his injured hamstring.
The All-Star hitting machine is eligible to come off the injured list Saturday, but Mickey Callaway said the Mets had not yet determined whether he would need a rehab assignment.
“I think we’ll try to get through today and kind of make some kind of determination on that,” Callaway said before the Mets’ 4-3, 10-inning win over the Indians. “We have to make sure we get him back and ready to go 100 percent.”
Jed Lowrie had a scheduled day off after starting his rehab assignment Tuesday with Single-A St. Lucie, in which he went 1-for-4 and “came out of it good,” Callaway said.
Lowrie is set to be the designated hitter again on Thursday, but it is not yet clear when he will play the field.
“I think we’ll get through the DH tomorrow and then make that determination,” Callaway said. “Like everybody, we gotta lean on the player a little bit to really make a schedule for every day.”
Jeurys Familia is regaining Callaway’s trust. The reliever, after a scoreless inning Wednesday, has allowed two runs over his past 10 innings of work, lowering his ERA more than a full run to 6.07.
“We have a lot more confidence in him right now,” Callaway said. “I know he has a lot more confidence in himself.”
Brandon Nimmo (neck) continued his rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse, playing four innings in center field and going 0-for-3. … Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single in the decisive 10th inning. … Justin Wilson threw another scoreless inning and has allowed just two runs in his last 17 frames.
