SAN DIEGO — Mickey Callaway’s footing as Mets manager remains secure, but for how long?
A club source on Tuesday described it as “way, way too early,” when asked about the possibility of general manager Brodie Van Wagenen dumping his inherited manager amid a slide that had pushed the Mets three games below .500, entering their game at Petco Park against the Padres.
The source added there was a belief within the organization the Mets would rectify their recent offensive shortcomings and pair that with a starting rotation that has rebounded after a sluggish stretch, and that would translate into wins.
So for now it appears Callaway still has the backing of Van Wagenen and team COO Jeff Wilpon. It was at Wilpon’s behest, according to sources, that Callaway was retained last offseason after Van Wagenen was hired to fill the GM’s vacancy. Under Callaway the Mets finished 77-85 and watched their season unravel during a horrid June.
Callaway, whose contract runs through the 2020 season, entered this year with the understanding he would be operating on a short leash, a fact that was underscored by Jim Riggleman’s hiring as the new bench coach. The baseball lifer Riggleman has served as an interim manager three times in his career, most recently last season with the Reds.
The Mets’ priority is jump-starting an offense that had scored six runs over six games entering Tuesday. The biggest nosedive had come from Brandon Nimmo, stuck in an 0-for-26 slump over the last week-plus.
But the Mets were looking to get Todd Frazier, Wilson Ramos, Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso producing at a more consistent level.
With Jed Lowrie continuing a rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse and closing in on his Mets debut, there is potential help on the horizon. Lowrie’s playing time would mostly come at the expense of the disappointing Frazier, who entered play with a .159/.178/.295 slash line after missing all of spring training and the first 3 ½ weeks of the season with an oblique strain.
Ramos, who arrived on a two-year contract worth $19 million in the offseason, has also been a significant disappointment given that his offense was the selling point in the decision to add him as the team’s primary catcher. Ramos entered play with a .236/.299/.292 slash line with only one homer in his first 106 at-bats.
About the only consistent presence in the Mets lineup has been Jeff McNeil, who has overcome any lingering doubt that persisted about his ability following a two-month stretch to close last season in which he was the team’s best hitter.
The Mets had a minus-26 runs differential as play began, which was ahead of only the Marlins and Giants for worst in the National League.
So to some degree, the Mets were probably lucky to only be three games below .500 and still within striking distance of the Phillies and Braves in a division that has largely underperformed.
For the present, Wilpon and Van Wagenen appear committed to Callaway as the manager who can lead them into contention.
