While the Yankees like Padres superstar Juan Soto, they have yet to speak to San Diego about him this winter (they did talk at the deadline).
The Padres reportedly need to cut $50 million, but last year they weren’t going to raise the payroll and wound up pursuing Aaron Judge and Trea Turner before signing Xander Bogaerts. Owner Peter Seidler wants to win.

Brian Cashman and the Yankees spoke with the Padres about Juan Soto at the trade deadline. Jason Szenes for the NY PostMatt Carpenter is expected to pick up his $5.5M player Padres option.
The Padres’ $32M, two-year option on Michael Wacha is a close call, but if they don’t pick it up, he should decline his player option for $6.5M.
Bryce Harper famously eschewed an opt-out clause in his record long $330M deal, which is a bargain. But don’t rule out an extension at some point.
There’s a decent chance the Phillies re-sign Rhys Hoskins, which would push Harper back to the outfield. Hoskins was a possibility to pinch hit had the Phillies advanced.
