The White Sox and Yonder Alonso have found themselves in a bit of an awkward situation.

Chicago designated the first-baseman for assignment on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The news came less than two hours after the team sent out a release promoting Alonso’s charitable bowling event set to be held on Sunday, benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and the Chicago White Sox Charities.

Other members of the White Sox are scheduled to appear at the event, but they will be Alonso’s ex-teammates by the time they get there.

Alonso was an All-Star just two seasons ago, and the White Sox acquired him from the Indians this past offseason to become a dangerous presence in the middle of their lineup. That plan hasn’t panned out, however, as the 10-year-veteran has slashed a dismal .178/.275/.301 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.

Alonso, who is Manny Machado’s brother-in-law, has also been linked to Chicago’s failure to sign Machado this winter. Although general manager Rick Hahn lauded Alonso’s hitting and clubhouse presence, many fans saw Machado’s potential signing as the main reason for Alonso’s acquisition.
