With Chien Ming Wang almost definitely out for his next start – and maybe the season – the question now becomes who will take Wang’s place in the rotation. Right now, we’d bet the two most likely candidates are current bullpen arm Dan Giese and top minor league prospect Alan Horne. Giese has been solid out of the ‘pen so far for the Yankees, allowing one run in 7-1/3 innings of work. He was even better as a starter for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre prior to being called up, going 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA (along with a 0.97 WHIP) in 59 innings over 13 appearances, and 10 starts, this year.

Meanwhile, Horne has recently come back from a two-month layoff from biceps tendinitis in his right (throwing) arm, most recently allowing three runs on three hits in 6-1/3 innings Friday night. Another less likely possibility is Daniel McCutchen, who has had an up-and-down first few starts in Triple-A, after a great start to the year in Trenton. He did, however, throw a complete game shutout in his latest start for SWB yesterday.

The guess here, though, is that Giese slides into the rotation, and that David Robertson, who picked up his first save with SWB this afternoon, will take Giese’s spot in the bullpen.
