Joe Torre can relate to what Aaron Boone is going through as the Yankees see the Red Sox pulling away in the AL East — even as the Yankees look to be in prime position to reach the playoffs.
“He’s played for some good organizations — plus, he’s comfortable in his own skin — but I’m sure he’s losing some sleep here and there,’’ Torre said before he threw out the first pitch before Saturday’s 11-6 win over Toronto. “That’s the nature of the job, even when your team is playing well.”
No one, though, is playing better than Boston and that fact adds some pressure to Boone’s job, according to Torre.
“The team you’re chasing is playing unbelievably well,’’ Torre said. “You look at the standings and you’re like 30 games over .500 and you’re still double-digits away from first place. That’s not fair. But, again, this game isn’t necessarily fair all the time.”
And Torre isn’t surprised Boone has handled the job well, despite not having managed or coached before this season.
“[Boone’s] got a history,’’ Torre said. “He never managed, sure, but he had a grandfather that played in the big leagues, a father, a brother. He knows what the system’s all about.”
