Getty ImagesMax Scherzer was brilliant on Sunday in a game the Mets badly needed.
But the clock continues to tick on the Mets slim and fading hopes on sneaking into the playoffs.
At 43-50 and 8 1/2 games out, the Mets are not in contention right now.
They have two weeks and 12 games until the trade deadline to figure out if they are a buyer or a seller.
We answer that and react to the frustrating series loss to the Dodgers over the weekend on a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.
Mets 9th round pick out of the University of Maryland product Nick Lorusso joined the pod. Lorusso is a third baseman from Monroe, CT and led the nation in RBIs with 105 in his senior season.
‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:
- MAD MAX: Scherzer was terrific on Sunday and the Mets badly needed it. He seemed to find out that it was his left leg causing issues with his slider and he may have fixed it.
- CIRCUS SATURDAY: Everything went wrong on Saturday. First and third with no outs in the 8th inning. Pop out. Strikeout. Strikeout. Their approach needs to change.
- BAD BUCK: Showalter has been terrible all year. Why did he put Trevor Gott in on Sunday in a one run game in the 8th? Why put Grant Hartwig in a 2-1 game on Saturday? Buck has pushed mostly the wrong buttons this year. There is no sense of urgency and no accountability being put on players. Has the change at hitting coach made a huge difference to this offense this year? Some of these guys look lost at the plate.
- SELLERS: Will the Mets be sellers? Who do they trade? What should they do?
Nick Lorusso Interview: Mets 9th round pick, 3rd baseman out of Maryland
- GETTING DRAFTED: Grew up as a Yankees fan. Thought he may get picked between the 5th and 7th round. Was getting a little nervous, but excited to be in New York.
- AGE: Is being 22 and older than a lot of guys drafted a big advantage?
- MARYLAND: Going from Villanova to Maryland and how the coaching staff prepared him for success.
- RAPID FIRE: Nolan Arenado is the player he grew up watching and trying to emulate. Would have loved to face Mariano Rivera. Would have played football if not baseball.
