WASHINGTON — Wilson Ramos received a final opportunity to extend his hitting streak Wednesday and made the attempt memorable.
In a nine-pitch at-bat against Sean Doolittle in the ninth inning, the Mets catcher hit a grounder that Howie Kendrick gloved diving. Ramos sprinted toward first, but was out in a close play. He finished 0-for-4 with a walk to conclude a 26-game hitting streak.
“I was like, ‘Great play. Good at-bat,’ ” Ramos said after the Mets’ 8-4 victory over the Nationals. “I fought that at-bat, but I thought that was the last chance to keep it going, but I was really tired at that moment. I ran as hard as I could. That was a great play by Kendrick, so I am excited and proud for what I did.”
The hitting streak tied for the second longest in franchise history with David Wright in 2006-07. Moises Alou established the club record with a 30-game hitting streak in 2007.
“I am very proud of what I did, and my family is happy, too,” Ramos said. “Nothing better than feeling like that, especially my family, they are really proud of what I did. My family in Venezuela, too. It was a bad day for me today, but we won and that is what I wanted. I don’t play for records. I don’t play for myself. I play for my team. Everything I did the last month, I did it with my heart.”
Jed Lowrie’s minor league rehab assignment will shift to Single-A Brooklyn on Thursday now that Triple-A Syracuse’s season has concluded. Brooklyn is playing in the New York-Penn League playoffs. The Mets are still hopeful Lowrie will make his debut with the big league club this month after spending the season on the injured list with various injuries.
J.D. Davis finished 2-for-3 and concluded with a .365 batting average against the Nationals, his best against any NL East opponent. Davis had 11 extra-base hits (six doubles, five homers) and 13 RBIs in 16 games against the Nationals.
Washington’s Asdrubal Cabrera tormented his former team for a second straight game, delivering an RBI single against Jeurys Familia in the sixth. Since joining the Nationals last month, Cabrera is 14-for-29 (.483) with 23 RBIs with runners in scoring position.
