From JOEL SHERMAN

Pedro Martinez found a better fastball as his brief outing progressed yesterday against the Phillies — and that was the bad news. He went from under the most comfortable hitting speed to the delectable high 80s. We keep judging Martinez by if he unearths a few extra MPH or not, when that hunt might be his worst enemy. When he adds the heat, it is not as if he is finding 94 or 95 mph like vintage Pedro or even 91 or 92. He is climbing toward 87-89, and that elevation reduces his command. More speed and less control is not an acceptable tradeoff for this Pedro.
