PORT ST. LUCIE — Don’t try telling David Wright the Mets have no shot at contending for the playoffs this season.

The optimistic Mets third baseman took it even a step further today, saying he has arrived for spring training with the expectation his team will win the World Series.

“We’re expecting to go out there and win the National League East and go deep in the playoffs and win the World Series,” Wright said. “That is the expectation that I’ve gotten from the guys who are here early, and those expectations I have for this team is to get back to where we are winning the National League East.”

Wright said the fact the Mets finished 70-92 last season has no baring on how he views the team’s chances in 2010. He cited having the same core – himself, Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran – that came within a game of the World Series in 2006 and the return of injured players.

“Just because we didn’t make a lot of moves in the offseason doesn’t mean the ones you did make weren’t good,” Wright said.

“Of course, there is a lot of optimism for every team going into spring training. But for us, with how Jose looks and just with a lot of people with something to prove, I like our chances. I guess it’s a combination of optimism and confidence I have in this team.”
