The Yankees made a minor move Wednesday, adding light-hitting outfielder Justin Maxwell from the Nationals.
The Yankees sent minor league pitcher Adam Olbrychowski to Washington.
Maxwell, who the Nationals designated for assignment last week, has played 122 games over parts of three major league seasons starting in 2007. Maxwell played in 67 games last season with the big league club and hit .144 (15-104) with three home runs and five stolen bases. Maxwell underwent Tommy John surgery in October after hurting his elbow trying to make a diving catch in the second to last game of the season against the Mets.
But Maxwell told MLB.com that he’s “pretty much 100 percent.”
“I’m very excited,” Maxwell said, according to the website. “I feel blessed that the Yankees were willing to take a chance on me considering I’m coming off offseason surgery. I’m excited for the new opportunity and for the new year.”
The Yankees designated outfielder Jordan Parraz for assignment to make room for Maxwell on their 40-man roster.
