CINCINNATI — The exhausted Yankees’ bullpen received a fresh arm for Monday night’s game against the Reds when right-hander Chad Green was elevated from Scranton Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A).
When Joe Girardi used six relievers in Sunday night’s 5-4, 18-inning win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field — including Jonathan Holder and Chasen Shreve going three innings each — the Yankees were in need of an arm to help out against the Reds. And it was doubtful that Adam Warren, who pitched 1 1/3 innings Saturday and two innings Sunday, was available Monday night.
Green was slated to start Monday night for SWB at Pawtucket. Rob Refsnyder was optioned down to Triple-A to free up space for Green.
A candidate for one of the two openings in the Yankees’ rotation when spring training started, Green opened the season at SWB. In five games (all starts) Green is 2-1 with a 4.73 ERA. In 26 2/3 innings Green allowed 32 hits, 11 walks and struck out 33. In a dozen games (eight starts) for the Yankees a year ago Green was 2-4 with a 4.73 ERA.
