TAMPA — The Yankees worked out right-hander Ernesto Frieri on Wednesday and signed the 31-year-old reliever to a minor league invitation with an invitation to major league spring training.

Frieri had 37 saves with the Angels in 2013, but hasn’t pitched in the majors in two years.

He’s coming off an appearance with Colombia in the WBC.

“This is a guy that saved a lot of games,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday.

“He pitched well in the WBC. Some of our people saw him, and he’s going to get an opportunity here.”
