TAMPA — As they entered the final day of shortened spring training, the Yankees’ Opening Day roster was almost set.
Manager Aaron Boone was not ready to reveal the final roster after Monday’s penultimate Grapefruit League game, but the latest slew of cuts earlier in the day left only a handful of roster decisions remaining, barring any last-minute trades before Thursday’s Opening Day.
“We’re pretty close to finalizing some things, but also kind of need to let the next 24-36 hours play out,” Boone said Monday afternoon.
The Yankees did make one deal after Boone spoke, acquiring right-handed reliever David McKay from the Rays and adding him to their 40-man roster.
Earlier in the day, the Yankees had optioned pitchers Deivi Garcia and Luis Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where they also assigned lefty Manny Banuelos and outfielder Ender Inciarte.
The Yankees were leaning toward carrying 16 pitchers on their 28-man roster, according to Boone, which would leave them with a three-man bench. Two spots would go to DJ LeMahieu and backup catcher Jose Trevino, but the other could be filled by super-utilityman Marwin Gonzalez, extra outfielder and speed threat Tim Locastro, or third baseman/left fielder Miguel Andujar. Locastro and Andujar both have an option left.
Aaron Boone APIf Gonzalez makes the team, — Boone would not say if he had on Monday — the Yankees would need to open a spot on the 40-man roster. They could do so through a trade (of someone like Andujar) or by adding Stephen Ridings (back) to the big league roster and then putting him on the 60-day injured list.
As for the pitching staff, left-hander JP Sears said he was told by Boone after his outing Monday that he had made the team. He would be the 14th pitcher to secure a roster spot, leaving two potential openings for McKay, Clarke Schmidt or Ron Marinaccio. Before the McKay deal, Boone said Schmidt and Marinaccio had “an excellent shot” to break camp with the team.
Garcia put together a case to make the team in a long-relief role with a strong spring after a brutal 2021, but instead will keep stretching out as a starter in Triple-A. This spring, he allowed just one run in five innings, while striking out two and walking none with his fastball velocity bumping up to 95-96 mph. He and Gil will likely still be counted on for innings with the Yankees this season.
“We put a lot into Opening Day, but that stuff can change in a hurry,” Boone said. “The bottom line is Deivi Garcia is in a way better place right now than my perception of what we would have seen four weeks ago. But credit to him for — and I told him this — going through a rough season, facing adversity and getting to work on it.”
Marwin Gonzalez Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostBanuelos, the former top prospect, also opened eyes in camp but his case was hurt by not being on the 40-man roster.
“Manny came in, not fully on the radar with us, and in everything he did, he performed well,” Boone said. “As I told him, he could be a guy that we could very easily reach to early in the season.”
Inciarte, meanwhile, can refuse his assignment to Triple-A, but Boone was hopeful he would accept it after showing he was healthy in camp.
