LONDON — Luke Voit believed he had a homer leading off the fourth inning. Why not? He scorched a ball straight away and London Stadium has what would be the shortest center field fence if it were in the majors at 385 feet.

But it has a 16-foot wall and the ball hit high on that and caromed away from Jackie Bradley Jr. Had Voit been running the whole way, he would have had a triple rather than a double.

In his next at-bat, an inning later, Voit did bust it, trying to turn a ball to left-center into a double. But as he turned at first base, he felt a grab near his midsection and ended up hobbling into second. He did not find the extra gear. Just trouble. He had to be removed from what became a 17-13 Yankees victory over the Red Sox on Saturday.

The Yankees and Voit described lower abdomen discomfort. Voit said that he could have stayed in a game in which he was 4-for-4 and reported feeling good afterward.

Aaron Boone said, “I feel the evaluation on him was pretty good considering what I saw.”

Still, Boone said he did not expect Voit to play Sunday’s London Series finale. When asked if he thought this could result in an injured list stint, Voit said, “I hope not, but I can’t tell the future. We’ll learn more [Sunday].”

Voit said he did not believe the field turf — laid over a soccer field at London Stadium — contributed to the injury. Boston manager Alex Cora said he also did not think it was a factor in his shortstop, Xander Bogaerts, having to be pulled with a calf injury.

Even with the recent addition of Edwin Encarnacion, a loss of Voit would be painful for the Yankees. He has 17 homers, a .901 OPS and has been a consistent force in what has been an injury-riddled lineup. If he needs to be placed on the IL, the Yankees could consider bringing up Clint Frazier or Mike Ford, who are on the 40-man roster, or Ryan McBroom or Logan Morrison, who are not. Morrison has a July 1 clause in which he could opt out of his minor league deal if not in the majors.
