CLEVELAND — With their season on the line, the Yankees totally shook up their lineup on Sunday, benching the mistake-prone Isiah Kiner-Falefa — replacing him at shortstop with Oswaldo Cabrera and inserting Aaron Hicks into the lineup in left field.

It came a day after Kiner-Falefa made three more defensive miscues in the Game 3 loss to the Guardians, which pushed the Yankees to the brink of elimination.

“I just feel like he’s pressing out there,’’ Aaron Boone said before Game 4. “He’s done such a good job all year of when he has made a mistake … he bounces back.”

The move worked, as Cabrera handled all the plays at shortstop in a season-saving 4-2 win on Sunday night

Boone said Cabrera would “probably” be back at short for Game 5 on Monday in The Bronx.

Kiner-Falefa said Boone texted him Sunday morning to let him know and that it “sucked” not playing.

“I got benched,’’ Kiner-Falefa said after the game. “It is what it is.”

He disagreed with Boone’s notion that he was pressing.

“I didn’t feel I was pressing, especially after the first two games in the series,’’ Kiner-Falefa said. “It was just not making some plays in a big spot. I wish I could have those plays back.”

Kiner-Falefa made three questionable plays Saturday which led to the decision, including on Josh Naylor’s RBI single in the first, a two-out single by Andres Gimenez in the sixth that extended the inning and in the critical ninth, when he threw to the wrong base.

“I feel like he’s been pressing out here the whole series a little bit, defensively,’’ Boone said. “He’s a little bit out there not to make a mistake.”

The Yankees went with Cabrera at short because they didn’t put Oswald Peraza on the ALDS roster, instead going with veteran Marwin Gonzalez, who has not made an impact.

Cabrera started three games at short for the Yankees this season, but the Yankees have finally seen enough of Kiner-Falefa, who made errors on routine plays all year.

“I have a ton of confidence in Oswaldo Cabrera at shortstop, and what he brings to the table as an infielder, how he’s established himself in the back half of this season,’’ Boone said. “So I have high hopes on Peraza, but also feel like Cabrera is starting to establish himself and at a more advanced level.”

Cabrera said Boone told him he’d be moving from left field to short Sunday morning.

“I just try to play over there,’’ Cabrera said. “I’m going to be me and just play.”

Kiner-Falefa arrived in the spring in the trade that also brought Josh Donaldson to The Bronx and sent Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela to the Twins.

Kiner-Falefa has provided mixed results all year after winning a Gold Glove at third base two years ago with the Rangers before moving primarily to short in Texas last season.

After the failed Gleyber Torres experiment ended with Torres back at second base, the Yankees wanted a shortstop for at least a year while they waited for the development of Peraza and Anthony Volpe, who ended the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

When they called up Peraza in early September, Boone quickly said Kiner-Falefa would remain the starting shortstop — and he did.

But Peraza performed well when given an opportunity, although the Yankees didn’t believe he had enough experience to contribute in the postseason.

Asked if he regretted the decision to keep Peraza off the roster, Boone said he didn’t, since Kiner-Falefa was the starting shortstop.

Nevertheless, they could have used Peraza at short, kept Cabrera in left and Hicks as a bench player, since he entered Sunday without a hit since Sept. 28, closing out the regular season in an 0-for-14 funk.
