The Yankees are bringing back a late-season flier from 2023 for more starting pitching depth in 2024.
The club is in agreement with right-hander Luke Weaver on a one-year, $2 million contract, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Thursday.
The deal includes a club option for 2025 with a $2.5 million base salary, though Weaver could earn up to $6 million based on how many innings he throws in 2024.
While the Yankees continue to pursue a high-end starter to fill out their rotation, Weaver should provide some much-needed depth.
He joins a group including Luis Gil, Cody Poteet, Cody Morris, Yoendrys Gomez, Clayton Beeter and Will Warren who figure to help out beyond the club’s top five starters.
Weaver joined the Yankees last September after being picked up off waivers and they were interested by what they saw first-hand.
Luke Weaver is back with the Yankees after making three starts last season. Robert Sabo for NY PostThe 30-year-old made three starts before the end of the season, allowing five earned runs across 13 ¹/₃ innings while striking out 16.
Across all of 2023, Weaver threw 132 ²/₃ innings (123 ²/₃ in the majors), which gives him a solid foundation to build on in 2024.
The Yankees had needed to replenish their starting depth after trading four arms to the Padres for Juan Soto — including Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez, who served as their top two depth starters in 2023 — and losing others in the Alex Verdugo trade and Rule 5 draft.
Weaver was claimed off waivers from the Mariners last season. Robert Sabo for NY PostOnce Weaver’s deal becomes official, the Yankees will need to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to make room for him.
