The Yankees failed to reach an agreement with Japan’s Hiroyuki Nakajima before their exclusive 30-day negotiating window ended.

The Yankees won the posting for the 29-year-old middle infielder last month with a $2 million bid. Reports said Nakajima wanted a multiyear deal, but the Yankees were only willing to offer him a one-year contract.

“We unfortunately could not come to an agreement with Hiroyuki,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said in a statement Thursday. “We wish him the best of luck during the upcoming 2012 season.”

Nakajima likely will play in Japan again next season.
