BALTIMORE — Willie Calhoun is healthy again, but there is no longer a spot for him on the Yankees.

The club designated Calhoun for assignment Friday morning after activating him off the 10-day injured list.

The left-handed hitting outfielder/DH had been sidelined by a quad strain since late June.

After he completed a rehab assignment Thursday and did not have any minor league options remaining, however, the Yankees decided not to add Calhoun back to the active roster on a day when they already had to make room for Aaron Judge’s return.

“[Calhoun] did a nice job with us,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees lost 1-0 to the Orioles. “Really enjoy the person, too. He was a guy that was a lot of fun to be around, while also taking advantage of some opportunities and doing a really nice job with us. So those are the hard decisions that sometimes have to come up in the course of the season.”

To make room for Judge on the active roster, the Yankees optioned infielder Oswald Peraza back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Calhoun, 28, hit .239 with a .712 OPS across 44 games for the Yankees this season after being called up from Triple-A on April 8 because of injuries. The Yankees now have seven days to trade him or place him on waivers.

The Yankees already have a pair of lefty-hitting outfielders on their roster, Billy McKinney and Jake Bauers, plus switch-hitter Greg Allen. None of them had minor league options remaining and keeping outfield depth was important with Judge expected to split time between DH and right field, at least initially.

That also played into choosing to send Peraza down to activate Judge.

With fewer at-bats to be had at DH for DJ LeMahieu or Gleyber Torres, playing time was going to be harder to come by for Peraza.

“I think all the outfielders have a pretty good role on this team, have done a good job,” Boone said. “Those guys are out of options too. Want to keep those guys in the mix.”

The Yankees are still expected to try to address left field ahead of the trade deadline this coming Tuesday.

As for Peraza, Boone said he sent the 23-year-old down with a message.

“Continue to handle this whole season like he has, which is really well,” Boone said. “I’m proud of the way he’s not been discouraged by anything and gone out and had another valuable, really strong season. He’s played well and that’s not an easy thing to do. … ‘Continue to keep getting after it. You know you’re an important part of this.’ There’s a chance he’s back at some point.”

Nestor Cortes (rotator cuff strain) made his second rehab start on Friday night for Double-A Somerset, building up to 49 pitches across four scoreless innings.

The left-hander, who struck out five, walked one and gave up two hits, is expected to need at least one more outing before he rejoins the Yankees.

Ben Rortvedt was in the lineup Friday to catch Gerrit Cole for a second straight start.
