After another stellar season in The Bronx, DJ LeMahieu finished third in the AL MVP voting.
LeMahieu led the majors with a .364 average, but Jose Abreu of the White Sox won the award, getting 21 of 30 first-place votes.
Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez came in second, while LeMahieu got one first-place vote.
The 32-year-old LeMahieu is a free agent after rejecting the Yankees’ qualifying offer of $18.9 million this week.
The Yankees remain very interested in bringing back LeMahieu, but there’s no guarantee they won’t be outbid on a three- or four-year deal.
LeMahieu said Thursday he likes playing in the New York spotlight.
“I enjoy it,’’ LeMahieu said on MLB Network before the award was announced. “Every game feels like it’s a big game. … I feel like it’s a city that loves baseball. Baseball is my passion, so I feel it’s a really good fit.” — Dan Martin
Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman easily won the NL MVP award, topping off a trying year that saw him become so ill with COVID-19 he prayed “please don’t take me.”
Freeman got 28 of the 30 first-place ballots. Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts got the other two firsts to finish second and Padres third baseman Manny Machado was third.
