TAMPA — For the second straight spring, Chase Hampton has a flexor strain, but this one might have some longer-lasting damage.

Hampton, one of the Yankees’ top pitching prospects, also “has something going on with the UCL,” manager Aaron Boone said in an update that did not sound promising, as the right-hander was back in New York undergoing testing on Wednesday.

“We’ll see what we have here,” Boone said after workouts at Steinbrenner Field. “But having an uneven season last year with some injury, he’s pretty bummed about that.”

Hampton flashed in his first big league camp last year, but then suffered a flexor strain late in spring after not recovering well from a live batting practice session.

He did not pitch until July, and then had his season ended early by a groin strain after making just seven starts.

The 23-year-old said last week he was hoping to advance to facing hitters if he got through his high-intensity bullpen session on Friday without issue, but instead it sent him for the MRI tube and likely a lengthy absence this season.

Hampton was widely considered a Top 100 prospect at this time last year before the injury-riddled season. He still entered this spring as the Yankees’ No. 7 prospect, according to Baseball America.

A healthy Hampton would have been among the Yankees’ starting depth options at the upper levels of the minor leagues, which almost all teams have to tap into at some point during the season.

As it stands, that group includes Will Warren, JT Brubaker, Cam Schlittler, Allan Winans, Sean Boyle and veteran Carlos Carrasco (who is in camp on a minor league deal).
