TAMPA — According to general manger Brian Cashman, the Yankees haven’t discussed a contract extension with catcher Russell Martin since December.
“We haven’t had any talk since the Winter Meetings,’’ Cashman said Thursday. “I would be willing to talk if they were willing. I have not revisited those talks.’’
The Yankees were willing to make a three-year offer in December but the talks didn’t progress. Instead, Martin opted for a one-year deal for $7.5 million. The 29-year-old can be a free agent after this season.
Martin impressed the Yankees last year, his first in The Bronx, with his toughness and production (18 homers and 65 RBIs). The team believes injuries led to a .237 batting average.
