SARASOTA, Fla. — The Yankees are not that desperate for pitching help.

GM Brian Cashman said the Yankees will not sign Oliver Perez, who was cut by the Mets on Monday.

“(Yankees president) Randy Levine asked me to look into it,” Cashman said. “I have no interest.”

SI.com reported that the Yankees had internal discussions about Perez as a cheap signing, but Cashman appears to have shut them down.

The Mets gave Perez a chance to win a spot in their rotation before trying him out as a lefty relief specialist this spring training, but he struggled in both roles and the cash-strapped team decided to eat the $12 million left on his contract.

Perez signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Mets before the 2009 season and earned three wins since.

Luiz Castillo, the other highly-paid, recently exiled Met, signed with the Phillies on Monday. He was late to his first game for them Tuesday and scratched from the starting lineup.
