TORONTO — Manager Aaron Boone said J.A. Happ could start Thursday against the Angels at Yankee Stadium, but wasn’t certain about the left-hander, who received a cortisone shot in his left biceps Friday.
“I’m thinking probably Thursday, but not sure,’’ Boone said of Happ, who last worked this past Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader in Detroit, in which he threw 4 ²/₃ innings in a 6-4 win.
Giancarlo Stanton continues to play in simulated games, getting reps in the outfield and at the plate as he progresses toward joining the Yankees on the upcoming homestand, which opens Tuesday night against the Angels.
Having played all 18 innings of Thursday’s doubleheader in Detroit and 12 frames in Friday night’s 6-5 loss, shortstop Didi Gregorius didn’t play in the Yankees’ 13-3 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Gleyber Torres started at short and Thairo Estrada started at second. Torres hit his 37th homer, and went 1-for-3 before being taken out of the blowout. Estrada went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
DJ LeMahieu’s 4-for-6 game was his 58th multi-hit game this year. That is the most by a Yankee in the past seven seasons. In 2012, Derek Jeter had 64 multi-hit games and Robinson Cano had 60.
For the second straight game a Blue Jays pitcher left a game because of an injury. Friday night it was Tim Mayza forced out with a torn ligament in his left elbow that will require Tommy John surgery. Saturday it was Jordan Romano leaving with a right ankle issue after twisting it while fielding a line drive that hit him in the eighth inning. He required assistance to get to the dugout.
