BOSTON – Jasson Dominguez has finalized his right elbow surgery, though the specifics of the procedure are still to be determined.
The Yankees top prospect will have surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow on Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone said Thursday.
While Boone called it Tommy John surgery, a source said the team won’t know the full extent of it until Dominguez has the procedure, meaning it could be a traditional Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure, or a combination of the two, depending on what Dr. Keith Meister finds when he performs the operation.
Either way, Domginuez’s ulnar collateral ligament needs to be repaired – which is generally called Tommy John, the source said – and Boone reiterated that the 20-year-old outfielder is facing a nine-to-10 month timeline for a return to playing in games.
“That’s the standard months of what it normally takes a position player to be all the way back,” Boone said Thursday morning at Fenway Park.
Jasson Dominguez at-bat for the Yankees on Sept. 8, 2023. Robert Sabo for NY PostMeister performed an internal brace procedure on Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story earlier this year and Story returned in seven months, though the Yankees figure to exercise caution with Dominguez.
Dominguez had a strong debut in the big leagues earlier this month, crushing four home runs with a .980 OPS in the eight games before an MRI exam on Sunday revealed the elbow injury.
He had been gathering opinions from doctors in the days since before finalizing the procedure and picking Meister to do it.
With Dominguez unlikely to be available to the Yankees until around June or July, they will likely need to add at least a stop gap center fielder this offseason.
It also remains to be seen whether the Yankees will deem him ready to join them development-wise right when he is physically able to.
Jasson Dominguez will undergo Tommy John surgery, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Sept. 14, 2023. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post“Look, we’re excited about the player we think he’s going to be,” Boone said. “There’s still a lot of development to be had there. First thing’s first is getting through this [surgery] and hopefully going through a really good winter of rehab and when we get to spring training, being in a position to where he’s starting to get close to being able to really do meaningful baseball things. We’ll just see.
“We’ll see where he’s at. He’s shown everyone through his last couple years in his development, his seasons he’s had at the minor league level and then his little bit of taste up here, the excitement around what we believe he can be as a player.”
After Matt Bowman gave up a three-run homer in Game 1 against the Red Sox on Thursday, the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A and added Luke Weaver to the roster.
Weaver, who was claimed off waivers on Tuesday, offered length to help eat up innings either in Thursday’s nightcap or as a potential starter on Saturday against the Pirates.
The Yankees expect to activate Ian Hamilton (groin strain) off the injured list this weekend in Pittsburgh.
