Derek Jeter has a small crack in his injured ankle, and is expected to be out until at least the All-Star break, according to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
Jeter flew to North Carolina and was examined today by Dr. Anderson, the lead physician on his original surgery. A CT scan revealed the small crack.
“He saw Dr. Anderson today back in Charlotte…They did a new CT scan which revealed a small crack in the area of the previous injury. We have to back off,’’ said Cashman. “This is obviously a setback. Speculating on when we might see Derek back with us, you’re looking at sometime after the All-Star break.’’
Jeter initially broke his ankle last October, during Game 1 of the ALCS. He is not expected to require further surgery, just rest.
“No surgery,’’ said Cashman. “(Dr. Anderson) told me 95% of the people come back from this finer; you just have to back off.
“He hasn’t done anything wrong. He was cleared to play. This is the third CT scan, and the other two showed 100-percent healing, This a new fracture but a small one, that’s the only good part…but it’s a setback, so its not a good situation.’’
Cashman said the club expects to go with Eduardo Nunez and Jayson Nix in the meantime.
