The media seems to be getting to Joey Gallo.

After NJ.com wrote a story that detailed Gallo’s meticulous habit of laying out his uniform before a game, the Yankees’ first baseman clapped back on Twitter.

“Me: Literally gets dressed.

“Media: Yup that’s why he sucks,” Gallo tweeted.

It’s somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy, given that the anecdote was intended to show why Gallo has struggled in the New York market. After getting traded to the Yankees in July, Gallo slashed .160/.303/.404 — all three numbers dropping from earlier in the year with the Rangers — with 13 home runs. He also led MLB with 213 strikeouts.

Gallo was also recently criticized by Pete Rose for striking out too much.

“How does someone who didn’t play every day strike out 213 times?” Rose told USA Today. “Ray Charles wouldn’t strike out that much. I just can’t imagine striking out 213 times without killing myself.”

He’ll have a chance to redeem himself in 2022, but it wasn’t a strong first impression in New York.
