PHILADELPHIA — Catcher Jose Trevino was rewarded for the defensive prowess he showed in his first season with the Yankees on Tuesday, when he won his first Gold Glove Award.
But the flawed Gold Glove system was exposed when DJ LeMahieu also won an award in the new utility player category, despite being impacted by a fractured toe for much of the second half of the season. When LeMahieu was on the field, he played well at first base, second and third.

The Yankees sent right-hander Albert Abreu to Texas in the trade, then reacquired Abreu after he was designated for assignment by Kansas City later in the season.
The Rawlings Gold Glove voting is done by each team’s manager and up to six coaches on his staff, choosing from a pool of qualified players in their league. They are not allowed to vote for players on their own team. There is also a defensive metric used for 25 percent of the voting.
