The Yankees will head into the postseason without DJ LeMahieu.

Before clinching a wild-card spot with a dramatic 1-0 win over the Rays on Sunday, the Yankees put LeMahieu (sports hernia) on the 10-day injured list. The infielder would not be in play to be available unless the Yankees advance to the ALCS, according to manager Aaron Boone.

On Saturday, Boone had been hopeful LeMahieu would be back in the lineup on Sunday, but instead the infielder landed on the IL.

“Just felt like in the end, he’s just too compromised right now,” Boone said. “He’s willing to do whatever, if we would have wanted him to go out there, but I just feel like in the end, he’s too compromised to be able to play at a level close to what we would expect out of DJ. In the end, I just don’t think that’s fair to him.”

LeMahieu last played Thursday, then received a cortisone shot on Friday in an attempt to alleviate the pain caused by the sports hernia, a diagnosis the Yankees announced on Saturday. The 33-year-old will need surgery to address the issue after the season ends.

On Sunday morning, LeMahieu went through a warm-up, took ground balls testing his side-to-side movement and hit off a tee. But after the Yankees had conversations with him, they ultimately made the decision to put him on the IL.

“Basically he said, ‘I’ll do whatever you think you need to do,’ ” Boone said. “He would have gone out there today and played and laid it all out there — that’s just who he is — and had no reservation about that. But [I] also think in my mind, in the end after watching him, talking with him, it was clear that this was the right way to go.”

Boone said LeMahieu would rest and possibly receive another cortisone injection next week to see if he could return for a potential ALCS.

In the meantime, on Sunday, Rougned Odor started for LeMahieu at third base and Gio Urshela shifted to shortstop. Both had big days as Odor hit the single to lead off the game-winning rally in the ninth and Urshela made an incredible catch into the Rays dugout to end the top half of the sixth. Moving forward, Boone said the Yankees would mix and match, along with Tyler Wade and Andrew Velazquez, based on matchups to fill the void.

“Obviously DJ’s one of the hearts and souls of our team and a great player,” Boone said. “Today was tough coming to that realization and that decision. He means so much to our team between the lines and just the person he is. So it’s difficult. But it also creates another opportunity for someone to step up and hopefully between Rougie and Wader and Squid [Velazquez] and whoever, we can piece it together. We expect them to be productive players for us.”
