Add minor league journeyman Brian Gordon to the list of candidates to start tomorrow against the Rangers.
“I don’t know if it’s 100 percent,” Gordon told the YES Network. “I was told to be mentally prepared to start [tomorrow]. That could change.”
Born in West Point, the 6-foot, 190-pound Gordon is a converted outfielder who is in his 15th minor league season and began pitching in 2006. He has spent time with the Diamondbacks, Astros, Rangers and Phillies organizations, and has slammed 119 minor league homers in his career. He even hit one this season as a pitcher, the first one by a pitcher in Lehigh Valley history, and is 4-for-8 as a hitter.
Gordon has pitched in three career major league games, all in relief for the Rangers in 2008, tossing four innings and allowing one run. In his five-year minor league career as a pitcher, all in Double-A and Triple-A, Gordon is a combined 25-13 with a 3.09 ERA in 168 games (22 starts).
Gordon’s last outing for Lehigh Valley was Saturday, meaning he would be on the normal four days’ rest should the Yankees ask him to pitch tomorrow. Righties David Phelps, who is at the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Hector Noesi, who was recalled from the minors on Sunday and has been in the Yankees’ bullpen, also are candidates to start tomorrow.
If Gordon or Phelps is the pick, the Yankees will have to clear a spot on the 25-man roster — relievers Lance Pendleton, Jeff Marquez and Kevin Whelan are candidates to be demoted.
Gordon has struck out 56 batters in 55 1/3 innings this season at Triple-A, and batters are hitting just .197 against him. He told YES joining the Yankees “was a special moment.”
