It doesn’t mean Gleyber Torres could push his way into the big leagues this year, but the Yankees’ top minor league prospect took a big step in that direction Sunday, when he was promoted from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Gleyber, 20, hit .273 (33-for-121) with five homers and 18 RBIs in 32 games for the Thunder. Sunday, in a 1-0 loss to Portland in Trenton, Torres went 0-for-2.
Torres, the centerpiece in the Aroldis Chapman trade with the Cubs last July, started 19 games at short for Trenton and five each at second base and third base.
Torres was benched Wednesday night for not hustling when he hit a ball to left field that he believed would go foul, but it stayed fair.
