INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
YANKEES: Sabathia was victimized by the home-run ball in his Monday road loss to the Rays — giving up two to Ryan Roberts and one to Yunel Escobar, neither anyone’s idea of a slugger — while still managing eight strikeouts in seven innings. Though five starts, he is receiving 4.0 runs of support, nearly two runs fewer than his previous low as a Yankee. The 32-year-old is 13-4 with a 2.98 lifetime ERA against the Blue Jays.
BLUE JAYS: Happ, 30, quietly has struck out 65 batters in 62 1/3 innings since he was acquired by Toronto from the Astros last July. This season, the former Phillies southpaw is allowing a misleading .198 batting average, deflated by an extremely fortunate .230 average on balls in play (.300 is the norm). Happ is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two career starts covering 11 innings at Yankee Stadium.
STAT SO?
YANKEES: Sabathia has held Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista to an .053 average (1-for-19) in career matchups.
BLUE JAYS: Shortstop Munenori Kawasaki, now No. 66, wore No. 52 in Japan in tribute to Ichiro Suzuki, that country’s iconic No. 51.
