DETROIT — Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said the struggling Gerrit Cole “needs to commit to attacking in the [strike] zone a little bit more.”
Blake joined the chorus of people in the organization who believes the issue with Cole is not his repertoire.
“His stuff is as good as it’s been,’’ Blake said before the Yankees’ 3-0 loss to the Tigers on Thursday at Comerica Park. “He’s healthy.”
The issue, according to Blake, is that Cole is that “sometimes he tries to be a perfectionist and tries to get hitters to swing and miss around the zone and it snowballs.”
The key for Cole is to “commit to go after the zone and not shy away from contact and living with what happens when he does and go in there.”
The ability of Cole’s first two opponents — the Blue Jays and Red Sox — to hit fastballs “takes away his strength of being aggressive with that pitch.”
Gerrit Cole Getty ImagesCole made just a pair of Grapefruit League starts during the shortened spring training.
“We would have liked for him to get more reps, but that’s how the schedule fell,’’ Blake said. “It is what it is and here we are. He’s got his feet underneath him now.’’
“He just has to commit to the process. He’s one of- if not the best- pitchers in the game when he commits to that. We have to remind him who he is.”

Joey Gallo was back in the lineup and went 1-for-4 with a single.
“We want to get him rolling, get him comfortable and get him impacting the game like we know he’s capable of,’’ Aaron Boone said. “The sooner we can get him settled in, the better for all of us.”
Marwin Gonzalez got his second start of the season, in place of Josh Donaldson at third base, and is still looking for his first hit of the year.
Boone said Donaldson is fine physically, despite having started just eight of the first 13 games at third.
“We’re picking those spots to where we’re being smart with him, especially this first month,’’ Boone said.
“I like the way he’s moving in the field. Now, we’ve just got to get him rolling at the plate.”
